Let’s face it, no one loves doing laundry. Even if it isn’t your favourite task, your laundry can still be both a functional and stylish space that you will actually want to spend time in. If I’m designing a laundry, this is what I consider when creating a beautiful space that works hard.
TIPS
1 - Functionality is key.
The functionality of your laundry space should be the key consideration of its design. Aesthetics come and go but the purpose of your space and how you want to use it is key to a dream laundry.
2 - Plan, plan, and plan some more!
Always keep in mind how you want to use your space and consider factors like specific storage requirements, working bench space, appliance layout, and what you want to conceal vs what you have on show.
3 - Look to purchase your appliances early on…
Have a good idea of the types of products and their dimensions that you’d like to buy. The depth of your bench space, which side your appliance doors open, and sink location all contribute to a functional space. Making these purchase decisions early on will make for a more seamless and enjoyable experience. Once you know the dimensions of your appliances you can then design around them. After your space is ready for its shiny new products, you can then take advantage of Appliances Online’s free next-day delivery, so everything will be ready in time for installation.
4 - Include a bench space.
Benches are a perfect way to carry out all those messy chores like sorting, folding and even ironing. When choosing a benchtop material consider a surface that is water resistant and durable. Engineered stone, granite, premium acrylic, or similar high quality material will work wonders. Because we’ve already worked out the size of your appliances, designing the bench and cupboards to the correct dimensions is a lot easier.
A stacking kit with tray is a clever way to include extra work space in addition to your benches. These kits fit between your dryer and washer and can be pulled out when needed to support your laundry basket or fabric softener. It then neatly slides away out of sight when not in use.
5 - Opt for a neutral palette…
Because it will instantly create the illusion that your room is larger and brighter than it really is. By going with a matching colour scheme throughout, you’ll create a more cohesive look and feel when you enter your laundry. Similarly-finished appliances will further enhance this atmosphere. However, if you want your appliances to be feature pieces, choose a contrasting colour like a dark finish amongst a light palette so they stand out.
6 - Let there be light!
Traditional laundry rooms can tend to be a bit dark, so always consider natural light to brighten up the space. You want to get in as much natural light in your laundry as possible so consider having a door, window, or skylight. Keep cabinetry or appliances away from natural light sources to maximise brightness. If you need supplementary lighting, try to choose bulbs that emit cool white light to best replicate natural sunlight.
